What We Offer
The UCLA Extension Writers' Program is the nation's largest university-related writing program, offering 550 courses annually in screenwriting and creative writing. Designed to meet the needs of sophisticated adult learners worldwide, the Writers’ Program features 250 individual feature film and television writing courses each year (onsite and online), a teaching staff of 80-plus professional screenwriters, agents, and executives, two results-oriented certificate programs in feature film and television writing, a nine-month Master Class in Feature Film Writing, and a Script Consultation Service. Our open admissions policy, supportive atmosphere, flexible and extensive curriculum, and expert teachers ensure that all students have the chance to do their best work.
Our Success Stories
Our vision of “creating futures through the power of art” is exemplified through many of our students’ professional successes. Among the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program students who have made the transition to working screenwriters and television writers are Stuart Beattie, Pirates of the Caribbean and Collateral; Gavin Hood, Tsotsi; Mark Steven Johnson, Daredevil and Grumpy Old Men; Randi Mayem Singer, Mrs. Doubtfire; Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Shanghai Nights and Smallville; David Self, Road to Perdition; Kevin Williamson, Scream and Dawson’s Creek; Carol Barbee, Judging Amy; Tasha Goldstone, Grounded for Life; Chad Savage, Alias; Miriam Kazdin, Sports Night and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit; and Tucker Crawly, Everybody Loves Raymond.
Advanced Workshops and Master Classes
To accommodate the needs of writers on the threshold of professional careers, the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program curriculum offers several 10-week advanced workshops each quarter and an annual nine-month Master Class in Feature Film Writing. Students are admitted through a highly selective process based on the quality of their writing. Both the advanced workshops and the Master Class in Feature Film Writing allow for in-depth and ongoing analysis of each writer’s work, along with brainstorming and problem-solving sessions. In the highly focused Master Class, writers go from concept to the completion of a polished, dynamic script which is submitted to an established agent for feedback and consideration.
UCLA Extension Screenplay Competition
Founded in 2005, the UCLA Extension Screenplay Competition gives students the opportunity to receive recognition for screenplays developed in Writers’ Program courses. From the scripts submitted into competition, the three top finalists receive in-depth mentoring prior to final industry judging, cash prizes, guaranteed reads by an agent, producer or creative executive, and a logline listing on Baseline.
